Phi Lambda Sigma Strategic Planning

Approved by the Executive Committee on: 18 August 2007

Phi Lambda Sigma has developed a strategic plan to achieve the mission, goals and objectives. This document contains a summary of the strategic plan and how the strategic plan links to the overall mission, goals and objectives.

Section 1: PLS Mission, Goals, Objectives

Mission:

To support pharmacy leadership commitment by recognizing leaders and fostering leadership development

Goal 1:

Ensure the continuing availability of student and practitioner leaders for the profession of pharmacy.

1. Develop awareness of the continuing need for leaders in the profession of pharmacy

2. Promote opportunities and rewards for leadership in the profession of pharmacy

3. Motivate student pharmacists and pharmacists to accept leadership service opportunities

4. Promote leadership research

Goal 2:

Acknowledge leadership achievement and award membership to leaders recommended by the Society

1. Strengthen recognition of Phi Lambda Sigma as the leadership honor society in pharmacy

2. Promote the national awareness and visibility of Phi Lambda Sigma by linking membership and leadership achievement

3. Build a sound membership base of students, alumni, faculty, and honorary members.

Goal 3:

Enhance the talent, skill, and effectiveness of leaders for the profession of pharmacy

1. Support and encourage programs and services to assist those who desire to serve in a leadership role

Goal 4:

Support and encourage sustained leadership commitment

1. Ensure the continued utilization of the talents, skills, and experiences of existing leaders

2. Reward students and practitioners who serve the profession in a sustained leadership role

Section 2: One Year Strategic Plan

Support a presence at the AACP annual meeting via an advisor workshop/reception.Goal 3, Objective 1M. Euler will work with AACP to identify appropriate opportunity. J. Sabo to develop materials for the advisor workshop once appropriate opportunity is identified.
Continue the regional liaison program and collect feedback from chapters and liaisons regarding potential improvements and areas to be addressed using this program.Goal 4, Objective 1J. Douglas will contact current and past regional liaisons and collect feedback. PLS executive committee to review feedback and development potential improvements at 2008 retreat.
Increase Leadership Challenge grant submissions by 10% per year. Increase 10% each year until 50% of chapters participate in the Leadership Challenge.Goal 1, Objective 3 Goal 1, Objective 4Promote the leadership challenge grant through emails, APhA-ASP Regional Meetings and leveraging regional liaisons. In 2006, PLS had 5 additional Leadership Challenge grants (over a 20% increase). Responsible PLS executive committee J. Denio.
Assess the website discussion board as a viable resource for member interaction.Goal 3, Objective 1COMPLETED. PLS website discussion board is not widely utilized and questions posted could be answered through other means, including better leveraging the website as a means of communication.
Assess the utilization of My Space, Face Book to reach out to PLS members.Goal 3, Objective 1J. Mattingly will assess the options and provide a recommendation to the PLS executive committee by the end of 2007. Do a demonstration via a web meeting to the PLS executive committee.
Increase submissions for the following awards 10% per year. Increase 10% each year until 50% of chapters submit the following awards. Awards: Chapter of the Year, Advisor of the Year, and Alumni of the Year (Chapter Level Award)Goal 4, Objective 2 Goal 2, Objective 2M. Euler to provide metrics. Responsible PLS executive member is J. Denio. Leverage the regional liaisons to promote awards, including submission deadlines and HOD drawing of $100 for the chapter (must have a delegate and submitted an annual chapter report).
Establish criteria and begin recognition PLS Fellows.Goal 4, Objective 2 Goal 2, Objective 2J. Sabo to develop criteria. M. Euler to distribute to chapters as part of the awards program this year.
Refine the AFPE Award to include the requirement of a leadership research project that would have a tangible benefit to chapters and members of PLS. Consider increasing the scholarship from $7,500 to $10,000; PLS could provide up to $5,000.Goal 1, Objective 4M. Euler/A. Spies to develop language on criteria for the Award and partner with AFPE to refine the Award.
Add $10,000 to cash reserve per year until 1 year operating expenses is available in the cash reserves.Goal 2, Objective 1-3Achieved in 2006, 2007.
Explore cost and funding for national office.Goal 2, Objective 1-3M. Euler to explore cost and funding necessary to support a national office and report to the PLS executive committee at the 2008 retreat.
Develop a proposal for a pilot program to conduct a Young Pharmacist Leadership Development Program. Propose 2 states to conduct the pilot program.Goal 1, Objectives 1, 2, 3 Goal 4, Objective 1K. Christensen to develop draft proposal for the PLS executive committee to review by the annual meeting in 2008. Once approved, PLS executive committee to approach proposed states to discuss conducting the pilots in 2009 (see below in Two Year Strategic Plan).
